"There was more than one Zille: one who did the typical illustrations for funny papers and another who did them alongside. The other drew without any secondary purpose or ulterior motive. Zille was artistically great enough to allow a particular intention, i.e. tendency, to flow into his drawings with impunity. His accompanying words to his drawings are striking, biting, juicy. He probably owes most of his immense popularity to this strange unity of image and word. But then there is a third Zille, and this one is my favourite. He is neither a humourist for funny papers nor a satirist. He is completely an artist. A few lines, a few strokes, a little colour now and then - and they are masterpieces."
Käthe Kollwitz
