Henriette Grahnert was born in Dresden in 1977, studied painting in Leipzig (1997 - 2004) and Glasgow (2001) and has been living and working in Dresden again since 2020.

The Leonhardi Museum in Dresden hosted the artist's first solo exhibition in her home city. On display were 30 paintings and just as many drawings and graphic mixed media from the years 2013 - 2022.

The exhibition was the last stage of an exhibition tour that began at the Städtisches Museum Engen and now led to our museum via the Centre for Contemporary Art in the Zitadelle Spandau (Berlin).

Susanne Altmann spoke at the opening on 23 September 2022.

"Henriette Grahnert moves brilliantly between, within and across the visual coordinate systems of a post-postmodern visual culture. Her painterly compositions - which sometimes seem like collages at first glance - are fuelled by quotations, associations and reminiscences. They bring together seemingly disparate elements from different times, styles and mechanisms. Sometimes they appear as a cheerful capriccio, sometimes they develop a differentiated analysis of painting, its possibilities and limitations. The resulting pictorial spaces are as complex as they are sometimes impressively clear. Art history - primarily that of modernism - is thus not only a source of motifs, but also a sounding board for intensive analyses of historical, social and cultural references and thus a tool for contemporary questioning."
