Stefan Nestler

collage concrete

28. Feb 09 26. Apr 09

“Stefan Nestler creates works in accordance with the principles of beauty, so one might assume he is an artist by profession; in fact, he is much more than that: namely, a reflector who sifts through time and everyday life, engaging with objects he brings back from his fantastical excursions or simply picks up somewhere in passing. This accounts for the bulk of the fascination of his works, for he always returns with strange, marvellous finds from his wide-ranging field of exploration, which lies somewhere between the discovery of the world, flashes of insight and the depths of history.” — CHRISTOPH TANNERT — (2008)

Under the title collage concrete, the Leonhardi Museum showed works from 1997 to 2008 by the Dresden artist Stefan Nestler.

We are delighted to present Stefan Nestler's first solo museum exhibition with this selection of collages, objects and photographs. Nestler, who was born in Freiberg/Saxony in 1962, has also created "horizontal / vertical / diagonal", an unusual, site-specific installation for our museum. In just two days, Nestler wrapped the façade of the museum in geometric scaffolding, making a statement about the ornate exuberance of the half-timbered building.

Stefan Nestler is an explorer, utiliser of everyday remnants, constructivist and poet. He has found an unmistakable language which - influenced by Minimal Art and the Dresden tradition of abstraction - uniquely fuses experiences of collage, bricollage, object art and colour field painting. From seemingly worthless found objects such as screw caps from plastic bottles, cigarette filters and stamps, Stefan Nestler is able to create art that is full of lightness and tremendous vitality. "He shows absolute respect for the found materials and objects by not altering their form in any way, but simply arranging, combining and spreading them out according to the aesthetic laws of form and colour.
