The exhibition

This important photographer from the end of the 19th century is presented in his versatile oeuvre at his former place of work, Loschwitz. In addition to views of places, picturesque landscapes and staged genre depictions, Kotzsch's "studies of nature", which range from late Romanticism to astonishingly modern imagery, can also be discovered.

The exhibition marks the publication of a catalogue raisonné of over 1,000 works by Schirmer/Mosel Verlag. the presentation is complemented by a contemporary artistic approach to August Kotzsch by Martin Bertelmann.

The photographer

August Kotzsch, the son of a Loschwitz winegrower, was the first commercial photographer in Loschwitz from 1861. He not only documented the development of the village from a wine-growing village to a Dresden villa suburb, but also worked as a photographic local chronicler. Portraits of the residents of Loschwitz were taken in his improvised studio in the courtyard of his estate. He captured village life and work in idyllic genre scenes. While these pictures are rather picturesque in character and are thematically and artistically rooted in late Romanticism, August Kotzsch's pictorial language also points the way to modernism. This manifests itself above all in his nature studies, which were his main interest as a photographer. Not least the still lifes arranged with the produce of his garden make Kotzsch a forerunner of New Objectivity photography in retrospect.

In the 1870s and 1880s, August Kotzsch was very successful with his "studies from nature", which he offered as artistic model sheets. He took part in the World Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 and in the annual exhibition of the Société française de Photographie in Paris in 1874. By co-operating with various publishers, he was able to distribute the study sheets both nationally and internationally.

Jens Bove and Agnes Matthias spoke at the opening on Friday, 27 March 2026.

Countryman and photographer in Loschwitz near Dresden 1836-1910
Catalogue raisonné

Around the middle of the 19th century, the Elbe valley near Dresden was a favourite meeting place for artists due to its scenic beauty. Renowned painters, architects and composers met in Loschwitz, which was incorporated into Dresden in 1921, for their summer holidays. Loschwitz was also the birthplace and place of work of August Kotzsch (1836-1910), who is regarded as the "photographer of the German Biedermeier era" and one of the earliest chroniclers of an epoch whose art and society were characterised by the first intrusions of industrialisation into the intact world of the village idyll. Rediscovered in the 1980s, August Kotzsch is now being honoured with an extensive catalogue raisonné containing more than 1,000 illustrations and produced in collaboration between Schirmer/Mosel, the local Loschwitz-Wachwitz association and the Deutsche Fotothek.
