Joachim Richau

Photographic works 1979 - 2016

2. Jun 18 19. Aug 18

Over the course of four decades, Joachim Richau has created a diverse yet cohesive body of work featuring a multitude of internal references. Richau’s work is mostly expressed through long-term cycles, which he organises into groups of works, all of which stem from personal references and a biographical approach. Any attempt to present a retrospective of his work can only succeed if it illustrates the interrelationships between the individual series and cycles within the three groups of works, as well as their lines of development.

Following the subjectively documentary works in the body of work ‘HORIZONT or the Illusion of the Foreign’, Richau began, from the mid-1990s onwards, to explore the structures of the landscape—particularly in Scandinavia—through his photography in the cycle ‘FRAGMENT or the Presence of Doubt’. The self-taught artist and maverick thus created a self-contained body of work full of metaphors that consistently reflect the relationship between the inner and the outer, the familiar and the foreign. Driven by scepticism towards the medium and a single style, the artist draws on a wide range of photographic methods and techniques: change remains his guiding principle in life and art.

"Richau is one of those photographers who, without renouncing thoughtfulness, see above all with the soul. The superficially narrative gesture of his pictures should not lead to one-layered interpretations. These views of the world exposed on paper tell above all about the person looking. [...] Always taking himself seriously in every encounter with the camera, for better or for worse - this is how Richau assures his pictures of the indispensable: authenticity."

The exhibition at the Leonhard Museum is an attempt at a retrospective on the occasion of Joachim Richau's 65th birthday, presenting his 40 years of work. Each of the four exhibition venues (Stadtgalerie Kiel, Alfred Erhardt-Stiftung Berlin, Kunstmuseum Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus, Leonhardi-Museum Dresden) focuses on different facets of his work. The Leonhardi Museum is showing 98 photographs, including pictures from his first body of work "HORIZONT oder die Illusion der Fremde" (a selection from the cycles "Bilder aus Beerfelde, 1984 - 1987", "Berliner Traum, 1986 - 90", Land ohne Übergang, 1992 - 93" and "finales, 1994" as well as from the complex "FRAGMENT oder die Gegenwart des Zweifels".

Matthias Flügge spoke at the opening on Friday, 1 June at 8 pm.

The artist was present.
