On the occasion of Peter Herrmann's 75th birthday, the Leonhardi Museum presented the exhibition "Ostende" with paintings and drawings by the artist from 16 June to 2 September.

Peter Herrmann plays an important role in Dresden's 20th century art history. During his years in Dresden, he was involved in several exhibitions at our museum, including his first solo museum exhibition in 1976 at the Leonhardi Museum. His last major exhibition in Dresden (together with Hans Scheib in the Octagon of the HfBK) took place seventeen years ago. On the occasion of his 75th birthday, we are revisiting his work: in the large hall of the Leonhardi Museum, we are showing new paintings by the Berlin-based artist; we are also presenting early paintings created during Peter Hermann's years in Dresden.

In the summer of 2007, Peter Herrmann spent four weeks at the Le Querce vineyard in Umbria. There he created a cycle of drawings, which we are also presenting to the public; the catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition is dedicated to this cycle.

Michael Freitag writes about the drawings:
"(...) An old work emerges, light, fine, from the pleasure that renunciation means if you want it. The colour, otherwise the most insistent signal in a sparkling pictorial event, arranged outside of any perceptibility - here it gives only coolness, translucency, backlight. The south is no longer in the motif, but in the knowledge that art is not needed here. The view is minimised without impoverishing the picture. It's beautiful because it's quiet."

michael Freitag spoke at the opening on Friday, 15 June 2012.
