Sebastian Rug is one of those artists who have dedicated themselves exclusively to drawing. For ten years now, he has been creating works that are particularly fascinating due to their intricate structures. Rug's drawings are not based on a predetermined design, but emerge from the creative process. At the beginning of the work, only the basic graphic element from which the respective drawing is built up is fixed. This then gradually grows line by line until a delicate system of horizontal layers of parallel, slightly curved lines, fabric-like structures or small-scale grids emerges, which can be interpreted figuratively, but can also be read as an abstract composition.

"An appreciation of Sebastian Rug's drawings would remain incomplete if one were to omit the question of the associations that can arise when looking at them. (...) Some - especially older - drawings are reminiscent of biomorphic structures on a cellular level. The double-line drawings give the impression of textile fabric. Still others can be related to cartographic representations, not only from the geographical, but also from the artistic field (...)"
- TOBIAS BURG - in the exhibition catalogue

During the early phase of his work, Sebastian Rug experimented with the medium of etching. In the meantime, the pencil has become his sole drawing tool and the line the exclusive graphic element.

Dr Tobias Burg, curator of the Graphic Arts Collection at the Museum Folkwang, Essen, spoke at the opening on Friday, 11 October at 8 pm.

The artist was present at the opening.

The exhibition and catalogue were sponsored by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony.

The exhibition at the Leonhardi-Museum Dresden was the museum's second collaboration with the Museum Folkwang in Essen (after Jan Brokof in 2011). On display were 44 drawings from the years 2005 to 2013 and nine etchings created between 2002 and 2004. It was the artist's first solo museum exhibition in Saxony.
