“Any appreciation of Sebastian Rug’s drawings would be incomplete if one were to overlook the associations regarding their content that may arise whilst viewing them. (…) Some – particularly the older – drawings are reminiscent of biomorphic structures at a cellular level. The double-line drawings give the impression of textile fabric. Still others can be related to cartographic representations, not only from the field of geography but also from the realm of art (…)”
— TOBIAS BURG — in the exhibition catalogue
During the early phase of his work, Sebastian Rug experimented with the medium of etching. In the meantime, the pencil has become his sole drawing tool and the line the exclusive graphic element.
At the opening on Friday 11 October at 8 pm, Dr Tobias Burg, curator of the Print Collection at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, gave a speech.
The artist was present at the opening.
The exhibition and catalogue were supported by the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony.
The exhibition at the Leonhardi Museum in Dresden was (according to Jan Brokof, 2011) the museum’s second collaboration with the Museum Folkwang in Essen. On display were 44 drawings from 2005 to 2013 and nine etchings created between 2002 and 2004. It was the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in Saxony.
