Art as a means of self-expression? This approach is of little interest to Tobias Stengel. He is a researcher. It is not the creation of images that seems to be at the centre of his work - but the search for a form of knowledge using visual means. During his research, Tobias Stengel came across Plato and the regular polyhedron. According to the ancient Greek, they form the basic building blocks of the world. With the cube, a special form of these polyhedra, the artist found his object of research, his obsession. From the cube, which he fans out in infinite variations on the surface, Stengel arrives at the crystal, the golden ratio, the "magic square" and "Islamic patterns".

"A wide variety of associations arise when looking at the works. They are reminiscent of European and non-European ornamentation, musical structures, microscopic forms or aerial photographs and illustrate the pictorial relationship between forms and structures in nature and culture."

Annekatrin Klepsch, Mayor for Culture and Tourism of the state capital Dresden, and Susanne Greinke, curator at the HfBK Dresden, spoke at the opening on Friday, 11 December at 8 pm.

The artist was present at the opening.

The exhibition at the Leonhardi-Museum Dresden provided an overview of Tobias Stengel's entire oeuvre - with works from his "Geometric Work" created since 1987, his works on the cube, the golden ratio and his "Islamic Patterns". This overview visualises the consistency of his many years of artistic activity. Around 70 of the artist's works were on display.
