Zeichnungen / Drawings

AI generated: The image shows a sketched representation of a person kneeling in front of a mother and child. The mother-child depiction appears to be religiously inspired, as the mother is wearing a halo and the child is making a gesture of blessing."Forgiveness", 2001, pencil on paper, 40.6 × 52.2 cm | © Jürgen Köhler

Since the beginning of his artistic career, Jürgen Köhler has focussed entirely on drawing. Although he is very familiar with the iconography of art history, there is nothing virtuosic about his works, which are reminiscent of children's drawings or surreal, medieval allegories. On the other hand, they often appear carefully controlled and constructed; lines drawn with a ruler are not uncommon. Whether in his strange figurations, which are not only derived from the European understanding of images, or in his "City Scapes", abstractions inspired by urban structures - Jürgen Köhler creates images that touch on our hidden and buried memories, fantasies and fears. His works have nothing ideological, no programme, no message. They are committed to the abysses of the unconscious, their interpretation, their access to the mind through the senses will vary greatly from viewer to viewer.

The exhibition and catalogue are a joint project of the Galerie Pankow Berlin and the Leonhardi-Museum Dresden.

Eugen Blume, former director of the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum, spoke at the opening on 19 January 2024.

»Köhler's pictures challenge the mind in a special way, precisely because as drawings - despite the sometimes large formats - they tend towards the invisible, constantly moving on the border between reality and dream, between day and night, between profane and sacred, acting in opposites, bringing something into relationship with each other that wants to be marvellous and not fantastic.«
